In 2018, Twitter set up a « quality filter » that concealed search results from content and users deemed « of poor quality » and restricted their visibility, leading to accusations of banning the shadow. After conservatives claimed it censors users of the political right, Alex Thompson, an author for VICE, confirmed that many prominent Republican politicians had been « shaded » by the filter. Twitter later acknowledged the problem, explaining that the filter has set up a software error that will be fixed in the near future.
