Steve begins to ask for proposed agreements in his first priority area: Daily Scrum Start Time. After any possible work agreement, it uses the Decider protocol to quickly examine the possibility of consensus. If there is no immediate consensus, the person who said « no » to an idea suggests what they see as a better idea. If more than one person has a problem, everyone is expected to offer a better idea. If too many people say « no, » the applicant should consider withdrawing the proposal. In the case of Steve`s team, the team has the first work agreements after 20 minutes: make the agreements together with the team and combine similar agreements into an agreement. Pass and vote to maintain or modify existing agreements. Then the team members brainstormed, proposed, and voted on the addition of other agreements. The development of team agreements should not be as complicated and detailed as the company`s statutes or the Robert`s Rules of Order.
A good working agreement should be simple, with few guidelines. Ideally, you can explain everything to a new team member in 30 seconds. Mark`s note: If you spend some time with a good setup, the cynicism is reduced among the team members. Giving people categories or areas in which work agreements will help provides them with a framework. In our workshops, for example, mobile phones, laptops, break times and punctuality are categories. In the context of a team, you can use some of the above areas and maybe use the Scrum values, but ultimately the team chooses what works best for it. If an agreement cannot be reached, discuss what might get in the way. If you have a small team (4 people or less), each person has two chords written.
At any time, a team member can propose a change to the work agreement, there should be a process in which this happens, and all team members should be part of that process. This goes without saying for almost all the decisions or actions in which the team is involved. Working agreements are the perfect opportunity to address sensitive issues such as conflict and disagreement management, as well as meeting plans, provision and low engagement. These problems cannot be swept under the carpet in the hope that they will disappear. The team establishes all individual agreements in the employment contract and places them on the team wall. In the months that followed, team members began to get used to the idea of reminding their colleagues of behaviours that did not comply with the agreement. All the sprint pairs ask Steve in a retrospective: « Is this still our employment contract? Is there anything you want to change? The list will be expanded when team members find more areas where they will see benefits. After six months, they are much better able to deal with tense problems within the team, or when the external pressure on them increases. Instead, you should talk about these issues as a way to be a proactive and self-organized team and use the agreement as an action plan to overcome them. If your team has been working together for some time, you have identified some of the key issues or concerns that your agreement needs to address. If you don`t have a personnel policy for these situations in your business, you can`t go with anything that works. Read each agreement aloud, then vote as a team to commit to the agreement.
